Wondering what to do with that old television or broken computer?
Beginning December 9, 2011, Elwyn California will accept donations
of e-waste including: computer monitors, computer towers,
televisions, radios, cell phones, printers, fax machines, copiers,
and other electronic devices. We have partnered with ECS Refining to
collect e-waste and recycle it to create work and wages for program
participants and revenue to help fill the gap between state funding
and the actual costs of providing services. Donations from
individuals and businesses are welcome. Donations from individuals
may be brought to Elwyn California; businesses with many items to
donate can call us to arrange collection of the e-waste from their
location; and we will also be scheduling weekend collection events
at Elwyn California and other community locations. Your donations
will protect the environment and help Elwyn California!
Iliana Arias, Federal Champion For Elwyn California and the
ACE Mailroom Contract
By David Myles and Seymon White (Elwyn team)
Elwyn employees and clients located at the US Army Corps of
Engineers (ACE) site are delighted to have Iliana Arias as a
Management Analyst for the USACE/ Mail room. She is a highly
intelligent individual who knows how to interact and respect all
people with various challenges, mentally and physically.
Iliana is a dedicated person who fulfills the team’s needs and
concerns dealing with USACE mail operations. She manages to take
charge of any given situation and solves issues right away. If there
is an issue that involves an Army Corps employee, she takes charge
of the situation and resolves as necessary. Her zero tolerance
attitudes allow her to get things done efficiently and in a timely
manner. For example, when the mail room was dead dry of nearly all
of the necessary supplies to function a few years ago, she made it a
point to find a proper channel within the USACE to order our mail
supplies when previous attempts failed. Before Iliana arrived,
supplies were long-awaited and stagnant.
Every other morning, Iliana comes into the mail room to give the
Elwyn team current updates with the USACE operations and to see how
mail room operations are doing.
Iliana is tasked with many duties outside of the mailroom such as:
records manager duties; ensuring other offices follow records
management guidelines; misc. communications & training; maintains
and updates the District correspondence manual; responsible for all
District Official Correspondence; inventories all records/boxes and
maintains a current database in current Corps software; forms
Management; Publications Management; and handling Army records
Information Systems (ARIMS); and last but not least, assists other
ACE-IT sites.
Iliana deserves this recognition and honor from Elwyn California, and
the ACE team and everyone at Elwyn, is grateful for such a terrific
Champion.

Rally for a Just Budget
On February 22, 2011
Elwyn California programs participants and staff attended the “Rally
for a Just Budget” at the Huntington Beach Pier to call attention to
the devastating effect funding cuts proposed in the 2011-2012
California State Budget will have on the daily lives of people with
developmental disabilities.
The rally attracted more than 2,000 participants including
consumers, direct care support staff, family members, care
providers, transportation providers! Carrying signs, chanting “no
more cuts”, and speeches attracted the attention of people driving
along Pacific Coast Highway, pier visitors, and merchants from the
downtown Huntington Beach area.
The rally was well attended and went great, but mostly it was
inspirational to see our consumers advocate for themselves and take
ownership of this grassroots event. Their collective voice is louder
than ever as rallies continue to take place around the state; as
letters & calls flood the senate and assembly committees working on
the budget issues; and thousands flooded the hearings at the Capital
in Sacramento. The proposed $553 million in cuts has been reduced to
$150 million! More work is needed as this action must also pass the
full legislature and the Governor, who has line item veto authority.
But it is a great start and we will all continue to work together to
see this through!
